5.4.1976 French trip

As the school French trip looms closer, I have begun to question the validity of such holidays. I have come to the conclusion that a group of about three people is about right for an enjoyable private excursion. Na’th’less, I am determined to enjoy myself on this (which shouldn’t be hard).

Issued a membership card to Paul C. today. He seems enthusiastic enough and genuinely concerned about the movement, but previously I’ve always regarded him as a rather shallow person. My judgement is based on little deep knowledge, besides, my social behaviour at this stage last year (the First Communist Phase) cannot be particularly noted for its profundity of thought. Let’s say he shows potential – and as such this must be developed to the full by providing him with literature and anything else in the way of guidance.

Read quite a large section from Hill’s biography of Cromwell and it can be said that he becomes a very endearing character, despite all his faults and imperfections, the more one reads.

Benny gave a very good talk on the battle of Stamford Bridge (1066) today to the history society. He explained things very clearly, although the actual battle details were slightly anti-climatic, because he failed to instil that vigour of expression needed to convey the actual fighting. Still, very well executed and not humourless.
