24.4.1976 crowd

Got up in good time to get through to Brid where I caught a bus to the Conference of Youth Peace at Scarborough. Steve was there, but no sign of Trevor. Matthew G turned up about noon and that was all the strength we mustered. Contacts on the inside led to us getting in free so long as we did some stewarding for half an hour or so.

Met and shook hands with Ray Buckton, Gen Sec of the ASLEF union. We were in a good position to give out leaflets – people tended to think they were Official literature. There were many delegates of the YCL there and I got talking to an attractive female comrade from London. Ray Buckton’s speech was well delivered, but the delegate from the African National Council did not put a great deal of spirit in to his speech. After a speech by an eminent scientist, we left – Matt gave me a lift back to Brid. Haven’t enough money to go to the demo in Hull next Saturday.

Had a night out with the lads, first at Steve R’s house then down to Sewerby. Got rid of a lot of stickers on the way (including 2 on Chippy’s caravan! by Tim who suddenly came to life politically!). Was a bit p’d by end of evening – ended by attracting a crowd of “spectators” by speaking pretty fluent French with Steve R, Tim and Nige.
