22.01.1976 YCL

Had great encouragement today over Steve Ripley. I have found out, naturally enough, that he has communist leanings. We set about discussing distribution of leaflets about Brid and he surprised me by saying he was willing to help. Great! After discussing the reality of setting up a YCL Branch in Bridlington, he at first appeared dubious, but later said he was prepared to join if I could convince him of the usefulness of such a movement and if one could survive in Brid.
I’m going to give him more stuff to be thinking of tomorrow and who knows? – he may be Brid school’s second member of the YCL. It gave me such moral courage and uplift – it really made my day. My aim now is to establish a YCL branch by the end of this year.
Steve F. disappointed me however, by saying he was a conservative – Ugh! I did knock all argument from beneath him and he didn’t come out best. I really gave him the works, finishing by offering him a “Let’s put it down to your age – political instability and all that”.
A Bridlington YCL Branch, by massive propaganda and action, if only it moves the area into Liberal phases, will have achieved a great stride. Most of the people have an interest in the capitalist system because of the holiday interest.
